Hey there.
Get your self a cheap super 8 camera. Get to the libary and find a book on how to use and light the camera.
Then go and buy some stock. I think its about 15 quid for about 3 minutes of film and processing. Im not sure how much extra it would cost for it to be transfered to tape but it should be easy enough to find out.
Then go and shoot your little movie.
You could shoot on dv and use cinelook to process the footage to give it a film look. Maybe speed up your footage a little give it a sepia tone and get one of your piano playing mates to record a nice cheesy soundtrack for ya.
Despin out.

Cheers guys for your advice! Does any one know the film The Three Amigo's? Within that film they show a short silent film in a church....any idea how that would have been done?

If you want the jerky Charlie Chaplin type film look, get a Super8 camera, shoot at 18 FPS but when you project it or get it transferred, use 24 FPS.

check out the widescreen centre in London http://www.widescreen-centre.co.uk
for super8 filmstock. They sell an old out of date Russian stock which is just what you need.

um, you are at University arent you?
Why dont you ask one of your tutors or fellow students?
You can edit either on a super8 editor or transfer it all to Video tape and edit on a video editing deck.
